CONFESSIONS OF A COLLECTOR

Tis the season to display scary and disturbing pictures, right?  Well, this is my doll head collection.  Long, long time ago in a place far away, (actually the place was a forest in Virginia about thirty years ago) I was out walking, enjoying the flora and fauna and through the mist and fog I looked down and saw my first found doll head. It was love at first sight. That moment, I became a boy who played with doll  heads, well more like, I started collecting them. Anyway, today the cabinet has about 275, maybe more, I don't know I lost count. People do react when seeing this display, some good, some not so good. If I took a vote, females, not so good, men, good. You explain it.

Just for the record, as a collector, my rules are, I must find the head without the body, I never remove the head from a complete doll, never.  Sadly though, what was once an unique and curious past time now competition to display and sell doll heads seem to be the trend. But, don't think I've stop collecting, I haven't. You never know when one will wash up.

This is so creepy. I love it at Halloween but I could not look at it year round. But I give you credit for starting this trend. I saw it in either Country Living or Country Home a couple of years ago....but they must have copied it from you. I like it that you only use heads found by themselves. And that no actual dolls were harmed. Do just love the baby in Toy Story 3D? Very creepy, just like this.

no i think the only scary part would be if you casually opened a cupboard door, and they all came rushing out.

then you would have the horror of trying not to crush half of them underfoot while you were trying to get the door shut again .

should i have said all that? i hope it indicates that i have a very cinematic imagination.

thanks for sharing kev!

Thanks for the heads up! I would much prefer to see a collection of heads than a collection of bodies. Now that would be really creepy.

Man, that head of Charlie McCarthy is CREEPY.

Do you accept doll heads others find?

So far, the heads have never tried to get out of the cabinet, although one day, while walking past the cabinet a pair of eyes did click open. Did I jump? oh yes!

You bet, Barbara.----- I almost put a disclaimer on the post with you in mind. I hope you can sleep tonight. Trick or treat!

I have this thing about old dolls, so I understand this. I don't collect them, don't have a one, but just the knowing an old doll was held lovingly by a child long ago when toys were scarce and a doll a luxury, just means so much to me. xo

Now, that is a deliciously creepy collection....

I find this hilarious but my daughter would find it terrifying. It is a great conversation starter. It's actually amazing that you've found them all. I can't say I've ever found a doll head sans body.

Yup, if I walked in and saw that dummy head I'd immediately run out of the room screaming at the top of my lungs. After watching an episode of Twilight Zone with a dummy that not only came to life and was evil (and this was waaaaay before Chuckie) I've always been scared of them. Barbara and I were separated at birth, BTW. Oh, and Kevin? You're adorable.

I laughed myself silly through your post and the comments so it's two thumbs up from me (theoretically of course in the circumstances). Louise x

i just find it odd that you've found that many. lots of dolls losing their heads out there. i wonder if anyone every finds and collects the bodies? that would be creepy. yours is very david lynch in its display. i like. but it also makes me uneasy. which i also like.

It reminds me of the doll's head in Toy Story. Beautifully sad.

creepy indeed. and ain't it great!?! i can vouch that you've been collecting for years. nice touch that you don't behead them. i'm still collecting my creepy people portraits you got me started on many years ago. they now look like wallpaper in my dining room. well, almost....still looking....but the prices have skyrocketed. there you go again, trendsetting. i have will have mine long after the trendy crowd sheds theirs. your grandparents are still a part of the collection, too. love that painting you did! blog is fantastic kevin!

I love reading the term head in association with you.

I will be on the lookout. Does it count if the doll head is found & sent to you by a fellow blogger?

Stephen I would be thrilled to get a doll head from you as well as anyone else brave enough to touch one. Trick or treat my friend.
